Who made God?

Thanks for the Question.

This is a question that many people ask and if you try and think hard about may get your head going round in circles. But the answer is actually some what simple.

As always (and repetition is a great way to learn), "you can't fit the atlantic ocean into a tea cup." We can understand lots of cool things about God, but there are other things that will always be mysterious to us.

So who made God? The answer is no one. The nature of God is that he is the maker of all. This means that everything in the universe was made by him. This includes time, space, planets, you and me.

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” (Revelation 4:11)

God deserves our praise because he created us, we owe him everything. He is the creator, we are the creatures. No made him because God is eternal. The nature of God is that he can't be created. Before time began, God existed, before heaven and earth were formed, God existed. This should give you a deeper sense to how big God is.

But here is something you may have not noticed though. You know how God is Trinity (One God in three persons). God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. As you read the Bible you will see all three persons of the Trinity are involved in creation. God is in perfect relationship with himself (pretty amazing to think that a big part of the nature of God is relationship). So Jesus, God the Son was also involved in creation, he is the creator not the creation, he is fully God, take a look at this:

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 3:15-17)

Did you notice something interesting in the verses? It is not just in Jesus and through that all things are created. All things are also for him (end of verse 16)! All of creation has been made to bring glory and honour to Jesus. You weren't made for yourself, you were made for Jesus. Your money, your education, your physical body, all of it was made to glorify Jesus. They all belong to him, he is the rightful owner of the universe.

But here is what makes the Gospel so amazing. Jesus is the creator, the one who made it all, the one who exists outside of time, the one who is the owner and ruler of the universe. We on the other hand are a race that did not trust him, we are a race that did not treat him as the ruler (that is what the fall is all about, it is humanity joining Satan's rebellion against God, to be ruled under Satan). The great tragedy of human history is the fall. The creature tried to take the role of the creator. Humanity tried to make itself the centre of the universe, the rulers of themselves, not just lawbreakers but lawmakers. God on the other hand loves his creatures. In the Gospel we see that the creator willingly takes the place of the creature. Jesus comes down to earth, to take our place for our rebellion:

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
   did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
   being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
   he humbled himself
   by becoming obedient to death—
      even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11)

What Jesus did should impact every part of our life. The passage above especially talks about (in verse 5) how it will affect our relationships with other people. It will make us servant hearted. If the creator Jesus was willing to die for us, we should be willing to serve others and not think we are to important. But there is more to it than this. Such love, such sacrifice needs to impact you! If you are not excited about Jesus, if you are not thankful to Jesus, if you are not grateful to Jesus than there is something really wrong with your relationship with Jesus. Often we can neglect or ignore the importance of this Gospel. But this Gospel is everything, knowing Jesus is everything, experiencing his grace is everything. If these things don't excite you, bring you joy and get you out of bed in the morning, than take a hard look at your life and talk to God, he loves you and is the best thing in your life, more than you will ever know.

For Reflection:
15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide their plans from the LORD,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us? Who will know?”
16 You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,
   “You did not make me”?
Can the pot say to the potter,
   “You know nothing”? (Isaiah 29:15-16)

 1. Do you see that you exist to serve God or do you think God exists to serve you?

2. Do you give God the acknowledgement, praise and thanks he deserves? Why not? Is it because you don't think he deserves it?

3. Does the Gospel make you feel thankful and loved? If no, what is stopping you?
